James married Anne Milner at Mallerstang and probably inherited some of his father's land.
James and Anne had four children Agnes, John, William and Alice between 1687
and 1695.

William Fothergill
b. 1692 in Southwaite?
William was an important farmer and later a yeoman in Southwaite. William had 8 children between 1714 and 1730 ,
it is not certain who is wife was, as there were several William Fothergills living in this area at time.
It is
thought Frances Smith is the most likely to have been his wife.
James Fothergill

James was born at Wharton 16 Jan 1754. He married Elizabeth Hutchinson at Mallerstang, they had nine children.
James again was a
husbandman.
Fawcett Fothergill b. 1798 in Mallerstang
Fawcett was the 6th child of James and Elizabeth. He moved away from
the family home and moved to
and became a slater.
His name comes from his grandmother's surname.
He married twice, his first wife died suddenly after 18 months of marriage, his second wife came from Old Leake her name was Bathsheba Baston,
they had two children, Mark Baston
and Thomas Fawcett between 1834 and 1839.
Mark Baston Fothergill b. 1834 in
Mark first followed his father into the slate business, but later inherited his grandfather's (Mark Baston's) manor house and 45 acre farm.
He married Isabella Fox from
They had 8 children, their first child died by scalding himself with coffee, age one.
Mark's wife died in 1889, and led Mark to go into a deep depression,
he moved to Freiston, Lincs
and took to heavy drinking. He died in 1910.

James was the 3rd of Mark Baston Fothergill's

The couple had 13 children between 1888 and 1912.
James was a very religious man and made his children go to church , chapel and Sunday school regularly, his daughters had to creep out to go to dances.
When his son John got married in 1926, James was now working as a rate
collector.

and then with tractors (as stated on his death certificate.) John married Olive Houghton in 1926 and had 9 children, between 1926 and 1942.
John enjoyed fishing. John's wife Olive died in 1973, which brought on depression and diabetes in John.
John later had one then the other leg
amputated, and was known as "Grandad with one
leg."
